Karu council Chairman receives award for promoting peace

Chairman of Karu local government area of Nasarawa state Hon. James Thomas, has received an award for championing peace in Karu local government area.
Obbut Global Peace and Reconciliation Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organization handed the award to Thomas in Karu on Friday as the ‘Best Local Government Council Chairman in Nigeria’ in terms of promotion of peace.
Chief Executive of Obbut Global Peace and Reconciliation Foundation Mr King Tom-Adie, described Thomas as a peace builder and a fighter for peaceful coexistence among diverse ethnic groups in his area, hence the award given to him and his investiture as the NGO’s Global Pillar of Peace Ambassador.
“Because of his impactful efforts, Karu LGA is the most peace loving local government area in Nigeria out of the 774 We have been monitoring you and we have Seen the laudable works you have done in terms of entrenching peace in the area since you became the chairman,” he said.
Tom-Adie who said his organization is recognized by the federal government, the United Nations among others assured that his organization will do everything to bring the Karu local government chairman to national limelight so other local government chairman and grassroots mobilizers can emulate him in championing the importance and need for peace in their localities.
“Because of your giant strides in peace building in your area, you have also been selected to be the lead guest speaker representing all local government areas in the country in a global summit on peace we are going to hold later this year.
“It will be an opportunity for you to market Karu local government area to the international community,” he said.
He explained that Thomas since assuming the Chairmanship of Karu has through various initiatives resolved differences between various ethnic groups in the area without allowing any issue result to violence.
“Despite the various ethnic groups residing in this area and the huge population and the fact that your area is a gateway local government to Abuja, Kogi and others, you have managed to maintain peace and order since you came on board. That is a feat many others are yet to achieve,” he said.
Responding, Hon. James Thomas, Chairman, Karu LGA appreciated the NGO for the honour bestowed on him as the best peace ambassador in the country as he pledged to continue to advocate for peaceful coexistence in the area.
“At times it baffles me and I ask myself that what have I done or when did I become the chairman that people see what they see in me and acknowledge me but the truth is that one may not know what he has done like those watching him.
“I appreciate this gesture and want to add that the award is not just for me but for the entire people of Karu because it is through their support that I am here and able to achieve what I have achieved and being awarded for today,” he said.
He also appreciated the efforts and support of the traditional rulers in the area for supporting him in propagating peace and ensuring any lingering conflict is nip in the bud before it turns violent.

Senate endorses Omolola Oloworaran as PENCOM Director-General
The Senate has endorsed the nomination of Omolola Oloworaran as the substantive Director-General of the National Pension Commission (PENCOM).
President Bola Tinubu had nominated Oloworaran for the position and sought Senate approval through a formal request.
Her confirmation followed the adoption of a report by the Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service, presented during Thursday’s plenary session.
The committee’s chairman, Senator Cyril Fasuyi (APC, Ekiti North), stated that Oloworaran met all legal and professional requirements as outlined in the Pension Reform Act 2014. He emphasized that she fulfilled the criteria stipulated under sections 19(2), (5), (6), and 26 of the Act, qualifying her for the role.
“The nominee has demonstrated competence and meets the legal prerequisites for this position. The committee finds her to be a fit and proper person for appointment as Director-General of PENCOM,” Senator Fasuyi said.
During the session, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin put the committee’s recommendation to a voice vote, which received overwhelming support from the senators.
Oloworaran’s confirmation ensures continued leadership at PENCOM, an agency critical to Nigeria’s pension administration and reform initiatives.

Edo Governor Okpebholo Appoints Gani Audu as Chief of Staff
Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has announced the appointment of Hon. Gani Audu as Chief of Staff, with the appointment taking immediate effect.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor Fred Itua, made the disclosure through a press Statement on Thursday.
According to the statement the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Umar Ikhilor, who made the announcement described Audu’s new role as integral to advancing Governor Okpebholo’s reform agenda for the state.
The statement reads: “It is hereby announced for the information of the general public, particularly the good people of Edo State, that His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, Governor of Edo State, has approved the appointment of Hon. Gani Audu as his Chief of Staff. The appointment takes immediate effect.”
Hon. Audu, born on August 18, 1969, brings a rich background in governance and administration to his new role. A graduate of Auchi Polytechnic with an HND (1994), he went on to complete a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration from Benson Idahosa University (2011) and an M.Sc. in Intelligence and Global Security from Baze University, Abuja (2024).
Audu’s political experience spans nearly two decades. He served as Chairman of Etsako West Local Government Council from 2004 to 2010, represented Etsako West Constituency 1 in the Edo State House of Assembly from 2015 to 2023, and was the All Progressives Congress (APC) deputy governorship candidate in the 2020 Edo State elections.
This strategic appointment is expected to bolster the governor’s administrative team and support his vision of transformative governance in Edo State.
