A Kogi-based rights group has challenged the state government to explain how public funds are being translated into better welfare for workers and improved infrastructure.
The Conscience for Human Rights and Conflict Resolution (CHRCR) said the reported ₦24.75 billion received by the Kogi State Government from the Federation Account should prompt questions about spending priorities.
The group’s Executive Director, Idris Miliki Abdul, also challenged political appointees to account for the impact of their appointments on their communities.
Abdul said officials should examine the condition of roads, schools, hospitals, healthcare facilities, electricity and other basic amenities in their areas.
He asked political appointees to show the tangible improvements their positions had brought to their communities.
“Those who make the loudest noise should first look inward and critically examine the real state of roads, hospitals, schools, healthcare delivery, electricity supply, and other basic amenities in their own villages and communities,” Abdul said.
He also questioned the amount being spent on salaries of Kogi State workers.
“Just last week, the Kogi State Government received ₦24.75 billion from the Federation Account. Against this backdrop, how much exactly is the salary of state workers?” he asked.
CHRCR said scrutiny of government revenue and expenditure was a legitimate duty of civil society.
Abdul vowed that the organisation would continue to demand transparency and accountability from public officials.
The group’s position has added to ongoing discussions about government revenue, workers’ welfare and the delivery of basic services in Kogi State.
