The Nigerian Senate has begun an investigation into the unfounded rumors surrounding the supposed impeachment of Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The Senate’s Committee on Special Duties has been assigned to probe the issue.

During a recent plenary session, Akpabio addressed the circulating rumors, asserting that the reports of an impending impeachment were completely false. He highlighted that legislative activities were proceeding normally, dismissing the claims as mere misinformation.

In a light-hearted tone, Akpabio stated, “We are here sitting down and doing our work very peacefully, unaware of the mischief unfolding behind the scenes. This fake news is hereby referred to the Committee on Special Duties.”

He elaborated on the prevalence of such false narratives, suggesting they are often propagated by individuals aiming to generate traffic for financial gain. “Those spreading this misinformation might be profiting from it due to the high engagement,” he noted.

Reassuring the Senate’s stability, Akpabio declared, “The issue of impeachment does not arise.” He called on the committee to investigate the matter thoroughly and provide a report promptly.

Senate Committee Chairman on Special Duties, Shehu Kaka (APC, Borno Central), affirmed his commitment to the task: “As the Senate President pleases; I will do the needful and report back, sir.”

Interestingly, there was no visible increase in security at the National Assembly, contradicting reports from some media outlets about heightened security measures related to the alleged impeachment.

This situation is not the first instance of misinformation concerning Akpabio’s leadership.
