Armed bandits unleashed a deadly midnight assault on Kaura Namoda in Zamfara State, killing seven local vigilantes and abducting an unspecified number of residents after reportedly battling community defenders for more than three hours.
The attack exposed the growing risks confronting local security groups as armed assailants continue to strike communities in north-western Nigeria, where residents face persistent threats of killings and mass abductions.
The gunmen reportedly entered Kaura Namoda through a riverine route around midnight on Friday before attacking parts of the town and engaging members of the Joint Task Force (JTF) in a prolonged gun battle.

Chairman of Kaura Namoda Local Government Area, Munnir Haidara, confirmed that seven JTF members were killed during the assault.
He identified Kofar Zurmi and the Old Market areas as two locations targeted by the attackers.
The number of residents abducted remained unknown at the time of reporting, while details of possible civilian casualties and property damage were yet to emerge.
The killing of seven vigilantes in a single attack raises fresh concerns about the capacity of community-based security groups to withstand heavily armed assailants, particularly in areas where residents depend on local defenders for immediate protection.
Zamfara has endured repeated attacks by armed groups involved in killings, kidnappings and ransom demands, placing enormous pressure on communities and security agencies.
The latest assault adds to the burden on residents already living under the threat of violence, with the fate of those abducted remaining uncertain.
There was no immediate information on arrests, rescue operations or an official response from the police and other security agencies.
The identities of the victims and the exact number of abducted residents had also not been disclosed.
