President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mandated the Department of State Services (DSS) to provide comprehensive security measures for all presidential candidates and their running mates in preparation for the upcoming 2027 general elections.

In line with this directive, the DSS is expected to collaborate with the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and state governments to coordinate security deployments while monitoring potential threats during and immediately following the elections.

Issued on Thursday, 3rd September 2026, this directive includes prominent candidates such as Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and his running mate Rotimi Amaechi, as well as Mr. Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. All other presidential candidates on the ballot will also receive similar security provisions.

The DSS has already begun assigning operatives tasked with protective duties for the candidates.

Additionally, some candidates have submitted specifications for their preferred security arrangements, which are currently under review by the DSS.

Notably, the security measures will extend beyond presidential candidates; governorship candidates and their deputies nationwide will also benefit from DSS protection throughout the election campaign period.
Furthermore, candidates vying for National Assembly and State House of Assembly positions in areas identified as potential hotspots will receive heightened security support.

Sources within the Presidency have indicated that states recognised as potential flashpoints are under surveillance in preparation for the National Assembly and State House of Assembly elections. This is aimed at ensuring a campaign process that is both safe and unhindered.

This presidential directive comes as political activities ramp up ahead of the January 2027 elections.
Political parties are intensifying their efforts, including strategy meetings and the planning of campaign rallies. Security agencies have previously raised alarms regarding political violence, intimidation, and attacks on campaign convoys during past elections.
