The Zamfara State Police Command has urged residents to remain calm and vigilant following a deadly explosion along the Dansadau–Magami Road in Maru Local Government Area.
According to the police, the blast occurred at around 2:30 pm on Saturday, 27 December, in Maikogo Village, destroying a trailer and killing several people, including motorcycle riders who were passing through at the time. The exact number of casualties remains unclear.
DSP Yazid Abubakar, the state police spokesperson, confirmed that the explosion was caused by an object suspected to be an improvised explosive device (IED) allegedly planted by unknown persons. “The Police Command has received a report of a tragic incident that occurred today at about 1430 hours, along the Magami–Dansadau Road, at Maikogo Village,” DSP Abubakar said in a statement.
The police acted immediately upon receiving information from the Divisional Police Officer in Magami, deploying security operatives to the scene to secure the area and prevent further harm. Explosive experts and other specialized units have been dispatched to assess the site and ensure there are no additional threats.
Preliminary investigations have begun, with officers gathering information from witnesses and local authorities to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the blast.
DSP Abubakar appealed to the public to report any suspicious objects or activities to the nearest police station or security agency. “Any further developments will be communicated accordingly,” he said, stressing the need for caution among residents in surrounding communities while security operations continue.
The Zamfara Police Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and restoring security across the state as investigations into the incident unfold.
