Former National Treasurer of the Labour Party, Oluchi Oparah, has condemned the brutal assault of a female corps member in Anambra State by operatives of Agunaechemba, the state security outfit established under Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

The corps member was reportedly beaten and stripped naked by the operatives, sparking outrage across the country. In a statement, Oparah described the act as “deeply disturbing and unacceptable,” insisting that no Nigerian should be subjected to such degrading treatment.

“Regardless of any perceived infraction, no one deserves to be dehumanized,” Oparah said. She urged the Anambra State government to take full responsibility for the actions of its operatives and ensure justice is served.

The former Labour Party official warned that the stripping of women in public is fast becoming a “disturbing norm” in Nigeria, with dire implications for human rights and gender dignity. She stressed that security agencies must operate strictly within the law and handle grievances through proper legal processes, not “public humiliation and brutality.”

Oparah also urged authorities to resist politicization of the case and ensure accountability: “We must stand together to demand justice for this young lady. Justice must not only be done, but seen to be done, so it serves as a deterrent to future violations.”

The incident has reignited national debate on the growing powers of state-sanctioned vigilante outfits and the need for stricter oversight to protect vulnerable citizens, especially women.
