In a move that signals fresh political recalibrations ahead of the 2027 governorship race in Kano State, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has unveiled Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, son of former Kano governor and influential political figure Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as its deputy governorship candidate.
The announcement was made by the party’s governorship flagbearer, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who is expected to lead the NDC into what is shaping up to be a highly competitive contest in Nigeria’s most politically significant northern state.
Mustapha, a former Commissioner for Youths and Sports in Kano State, stepped down from his cabinet position earlier this year following widening political differences within the state’s ruling alliance. His resignation, which he described as painful, marked a turning point in his political trajectory and has now positioned him directly on the ballot of a rival platform.
In his remarks after leaving office, he praised Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for the opportunity to serve and expressed optimism that youth and sports development initiatives in the state would continue to receive attention despite political shifts.
The decision to pair him with Gwarzo is already generating attention across Kano’s political circles, largely because of Mustapha’s family pedigree and the deep-rooted influence of the Kwankwasiyya political structure. Analysts say the ticket could reshape emerging alliances, especially as parties reposition themselves for voter appeal in a state known for its intense electoral contests.
With political alignments still fluid, the NDC’s choice is being viewed as a strategic gamble that blends experience, name recognition, and grassroots influence—factors that could prove decisive in the run-up to 2027.
