Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has warned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to yield to political pressure before the 2027 elections.
He stressed that Nigerians must be allowed to freely choose their leaders.
Obi spoke during a thank-you tour in Ogugu, Kogi State, after High Chief Peter Ameh was nominated as the NDC’s Kogi East senatorial candidate.
He emphasized that the credibility of the elections depends on INEC’s ability to resist manipulation and ensure every vote is counted.
He also highlighted that the responsibility for credible elections does not rest solely with INEC. He urged Nigerians to protect their votes on election day.
Obi expressed concern about the election outcome but focused on how people can safeguard their votes. He called for a campaign based on issues rather than political rhetoric.
Discussing the hardships faced by communities, he mentioned issues like education, insecurity, and poverty. Obi called for a government that focuses on creating decent livelihoods and improving education.
He raised concerns about food security, urging that farmers need support to increase domestic food production. He encouraged voters to evaluate candidates on their competence, character, and commitment to development.
Ameh echoed these points, criticizing poor infrastructure in coal-producing areas. He urged voters to scrutinize candidates’ records for effective representation.
Both emphasized the need for voters to protect their ballots until results are declared after the 2027 elections.
