HURIWA condemns Plateau killings, urges urgent action to halt rising violence

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has condemned the killing of 13 persons in Ngbra Zongo community of Kwall District, Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, describing the attack as another tragic reminder of the worsening security situation in the state.
The group said the incident, in which several others were injured, reflects a persistent pattern of violent attacks on rural communities that has continued despite repeated public outcry and government assurances.
In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko, HURIWA expressed concern that the latest killings add to a growing list of similar incidents across Plateau communities, including Bassa and Barkin Ladi, where residents have repeatedly come under attack.
The organisation said the situation has created fear and uncertainty among citizens, especially in rural areas where security presence remains limited.
It criticised what it described as slow and reactive responses to previous attacks, warning that continued failure to prevent or effectively respond to such incidents risks further emboldening perpetrators.
HURIWA called for strengthened security deployment in vulnerable communities across Plateau State, urging authorities to move beyond routine condemnations and focus on intelligence-driven prevention strategies.
It also advocated for a transparent investigation into the recurring violence, insisting that those behind the attacks must be identified, arrested and prosecuted.
The group further stressed the need for coordinated action between federal and state authorities to restore confidence among affected communities and prevent further loss of lives.
According to HURIWA, addressing insecurity in Plateau State requires sustained political will, improved security coordination and timely intervention, rather than statements issued after each attack.
