Bala Mohammed Pushes Back, Says Refusal to Join APC Not a Crime

Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, has taken a firm stance against what he describes as growing political pressure from the Federal Government, insisting he will not be targeted for refusing to align with the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Addressing journalists, the governor accused the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of deploying state institutions to intimidate opposition voices, alleging that agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the courts are being used as tools of political control.
Mohammed warned that such actions, if unchecked, could heighten political tensions and undermine democratic freedoms, stressing that dissent should not be criminalised in a democratic system.
“If they don’t stop, we are prepared to resist. I will not allow anyone to criminalise me because I refuse to join their party,” he said.
Reaffirming his position, the governor made it clear he has no intention of defecting, adding that he remains committed to speaking out against any form of perceived abuse of power.
He further called for respect for political plurality, noting that democracy thrives on opposition and the freedom of individuals to choose their political affiliations without fear of persecution.
