The All Progressives Congress (APC) will determine President Bola Tinubu’s running mate for the 2027 election after its national convention, according to the party’s National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru.
Basiru made the clarification during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Friday, stating that although President Tinubu has received broad endorsements from party stakeholders to seek re-election, conversations about his vice-presidential pick are premature.
“As far as we are concerned, the national summit held in the Presidential Villa has endorsed Mr. President,” he said. “The running mate issue is not yet on the table.”
The clarification followed recent tensions in the party’s North-East caucus.
At a stakeholders’ meeting in Gombe State last Sunday, APC Vice Chairman (North-East) Mustapha Salihu endorsed Tinubu but failed to mention Vice President Kashim Shettima—an omission that drew protests reportedly led by Borno Governor Babagana Zulum, a close ally of Shettima.
