In a bold move to propel Nigeria into the next era of digital innovation, the Jigawa State Government, in partnership with Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT), has launched a transformative five-day training program aimed at equipping 150 youth with essential skills in V-SAT technology and Hackathon innovations.
The initiative marks a major step in empowering the youth to become self-reliant and actively contribute to the nation’s digital economy.
The program, designed to unlock the potential of youth in ICT, was officially opened by the Jigawa State Governor, Malam Umar Namadi, represented by the State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Hadiza Abdulwahab. During her speech, Mrs. Abdulwahab reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to creating jobs through technological innovation, which is one of the core priorities in Governor Namadi’s 12-point agenda for economic transformation.
“One of the key pillars of this administration is youth empowerment through technology,” Mrs. Abdulwahab stated. “The establishment of agencies like Galaxy Information Technology and Telecommunications (Galaxy ITT) and the Jigawa State Information Technology and Digital Economy Agency (JISITDEA) is a clear demonstration of our dedication to fostering a robust digital ecosystem in the state.”
Mrs. Jane Egerton Idehen, the Managing Director of NIGCOMSAT, described the initiative as a groundbreaking move to build grassroots innovation in satellite technology.
“This program is not just about training; it’s about creating a future where young Nigerians are at the forefront of technological advancements. We are equipping them with the tools and knowledge to develop solutions that will shape industries and solve pressing challenges like agriculture, disaster management, telecommunications, and security,” she said.
The training focuses on two critical sub-programs: *Spacehack 2025*, an innovation-driven initiative designed to tackle real-world problems through satellite technology, and V-SAT technology, which enables seamless communication across various sectors through satellite-based systems. Both areas are poised to provide youth with the expertise needed to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s growing tech industry.
“This initiative is more than a training session—it’s a stepping stone toward self-sufficiency and economic independence for the youth of Jigawa and beyond. We are paving the way for a new generation of tech-savvy leaders who will not only participate in the digital revolution but lead it,” Mrs. Egerton Idehen added.
The program is part of a nationwide roll-out that will span all six geopolitical zones in Nigeria, with Jigawa serving as the starting point for the Northwest. After Dutse, the training will continue in Adamawa, Ondo, and Owerri, ensuring that the opportunity to learn cutting-edge digital skills is accessible to youth across the country.
Dr. Habib Muhammad Ubale, Director-General of the Jigawa State Economic Empowerment and Youth Employment Agency, expressed optimism about the program’s long-term impact.
“The skills gained here will directly address the pressing need for job creation, stimulate economic growth, and empower young people to become change agents in their communities.
This initiative aligns perfectly with Governor Namadi’s vision to create thousands of jobs, boost the local economy, and enhance security by engaging youth in productive endeavors.”
Governor Namadi’s support for the initiative underscores the state’s commitment to digital transformation and job creation. By fostering a culture of innovation, Jigawa is positioning itself as a key player in Nigeria’s tech-driven future.
As the training progresses, the hope is that the youth of Jigawa—and ultimately all of Nigeria—will emerge as leaders in the space-tech industry, equipped to tackle the nation’s most pressing challenges and seize opportunities in the ever-evolving digital landscape.
With the right skills and support, these young innovators are poised to drive the growth of Nigeria’s creative economy and contribute to its prosperity in the global digital economy.
