South-West Lawmakers Hail Fasoranti at 100

***Say Vision for Restructured Nigeria Taking Shape

The South-West Caucus of the National Assembly on Sunday joined Nigerians in celebrating elder statesman and leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political group Ayo Fasoranti on his 100th birthday, describing him as a courageous voice for Yoruba interests and a consistent advocate of democratic governance.
In a statement signed by Senate Leader and Caucus Chairman, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, the lawmakers said Fasoranti’s life reflects discipline, integrity, and unwavering commitment to public service and national unity.
Bamidele noted that the centenarian, a close disciple of the late nationalist Obafemi Awolowo, remained one of the strongest voices in the struggle against military rule and a key figure in Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.
He said Fasoranti’s long-standing advocacy for true federalism continues to inspire ongoing constitutional reforms in the National Assembly aimed at restructuring governance for greater efficiency and fairness.
According to him, initiatives such as the proposed establishment of state police and regional development commissions reflect a gradual shift toward the kind of decentralised system Fasoranti has consistently championed.
“The vision of a more balanced and accountable federation, which Baba Fasoranti has spoken about for decades, is now being reflected in key national reforms,” Bamidele said.
He added that the South-West lawmakers, alongside other members of the National Assembly, are committed to deepening reforms that will strengthen national unity while ensuring equity across regions.
Bamidele further praised Fasoranti’s endurance and clarity of thought at 100, describing his longevity as a blessing to Nigeria and a testament to a life dedicated to service.
He prayed for continued good health for the elder statesman, expressing hope that he would witness the full realisation of a restructured and more prosperous Nigeria.
