Six Kano Central senatorial aspirants under the APC have stepped aside to back former Kano State governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, in a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 elections.
The breakthrough followed a reconciliation meeting in Abuja involving stakeholders and the intervention of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, which helped resolve weeks of tension over Shekarau’s emergence as a consensus candidate.
The aspirants—including Sha’aban Sharada, Usman Bala, Danyaro Yakasai, Abbas Sani Abbas, Abdulfatah Zango and Shehu Isah Direba—had initially opposed the arrangement, insisting on a competitive primary. But after the meeting, they agreed to step down in the interest of unity and party stability.
Their withdrawal marks a significant shift in Kano politics, as the APC moves to consolidate support and avoid internal fractures ahead of the upcoming electoral cycle.
