Dan Magaji, a bustling community in Zaria, was thrown into mourning on Monday morning after a devastating fuel tanker explosion killed multiple people and left several others injured. Residents describe the tragedy as one of the most harrowing road disasters the area has witnessed in years.
The incident occurred at about 8:30 a.m. near Rochas Foundation School, along the Kaduna–Kano expressway bypass between Kwangila and Dan Magaji. According to reports from Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication, the crash involved two fuel-laden tankers and two passenger-filled Volkswagen Golf cars.
Eyewitnesses said the impact of the collision triggered five successive explosions, sending massive fireballs into the sky and covering the area in thick, black smoke visible from miles away.
“All the occupants of the cars died instantly, except one driver who managed to survive but sustained severe burns,” a local trader, Musa Ibrahim, told News Point Nigeria.
Emergency services, including firefighters, police, and paramedics, raced to the scene. The area was immediately cordoned off as rescue operations began, with officials warning motorists and pedestrians to avoid the route to prevent further casualties.
By midday, rescue teams were seen recovering charred remains from the mangled wreckage while others tended to the injured. Relatives of victims gathered at the scene, some weeping uncontrollably as they awaited identification of their loved ones. Many businesses in Dan Magaji closed in mourning.
Although the exact death toll is yet to be confirmed, preliminary accounts suggest dozens may have died in the inferno.
Fuel tanker explosions are a recurring tragedy in Nigeria, often linked to reckless driving, poor vehicle maintenance, and, in some cases, dangerous fuel scooping by bystanders. Data collected between January 2009 and October 2024 records at least 169 tanker accidents, claiming 613 lives nationwide.
The years 2009 and 2014 recorded the fewest incidents, with three each, while 2019 was the deadliest, with 203 fatalities in 29 separate accidents.
Recent incidents include: October 2024, Jigawa State: Over 150 people killed when a tanker exploded in a crowded market, Niger State: Five people killed in a tanker accident, Agbor, Delta State: Multiple fatalities in another tanker crash.
By Monday afternoon, the Kaduna State Government announced that a full investigation would be conducted to determine the exact cause of the crash and to explore stronger safety measures aimed at preventing similar disasters.
Authorities have urged commercial drivers to adhere to strict safety regulations and called on communities to avoid risky behaviours, such as approaching fuel spill sites.
For now, Dan Magaji mourns, its streets quiet under a pall of smoke and grief, as the community comes to terms with a disaster that has left deep scars on its people.
