Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, has urged people nursing the pain of rejection and heartbreak not to mistake a painful chapter for the end of their lives.
Dalung gave the advice while reflecting on gospel minister Nathaniel Bassey’s account of how he met his wife, Sarah, saying the story reminded him that some of life’s most beautiful moments can emerge from circumstances people never planned.
For Dalung, the striking part of Bassey’s story was not simply the romance but what happened after the singer had been hurt by a previous relationship.
According to Bassey’s account, a painful heartbreak in 2008 left him so discouraged about marriage that he jokingly described himself as “married to Jesus.”
Years later, during a ministry assignment in Eket, he encountered Sarah, who was serving on the protocol team.
Dalung said Bassey did not immediately pursue her because his previous experience had made him cautious. However, he eventually spoke to her pastor after she continued to occupy his thoughts.
What made the story particularly striking to Dalung was that Sarah had also independently developed an impression about Bassey before he approached her.
“There was no prior conversation, no romantic relationship and no exchange of numbers. Yet both were carrying an impression about the same person,” Dalung observed.
But rather than present the experience simply as a romantic or supernatural story, Dalung drew a broader lesson from it.
He said people often allow rejection to convince them that they have lost their only chance at happiness.
According to him, heartbreak can make people shut themselves away, become desperate to force relationships or continue pursuing people who have already chosen to leave.
“Sometimes, you simply have to let go, heal and allow life to unfold without trying to control every outcome,” he said.
Dalung cautioned against holding on to expired relationships simply because of fear of what might come next.
He said rejection by one person should not be interpreted as rejection by life itself.
“The person who walks away from you may not be the person who was meant to stay,” he said, adding that what breaks a person could eventually become part of what prepares them for something better.
However, Dalung also urged people to exercise discernment, particularly when interpreting events through faith.
He warned against turning every coincidence, emotion or attraction into a supposed divine message simply because it fits what someone desperately wants.
“Not every strong feeling is a revelation. Not every coincidence is a prophecy. Not every person who enters your life is your ‘destiny partner,’” he said.
Dalung acknowledged that the supernatural dimension of Bassey’s story could not be independently established, stressing that the couple’s experience remained their own.
But he said the lesson was universal: a painful ending does not necessarily mean the story is over.
For people struggling with rejection, disappointment or the loss of a relationship, Dalung urged them to heal rather than allow their past to dictate their future.
“A door closing can hurt. It can humble you. But it may not be the end of your story,” he said.
“Sometimes, you simply have not reached the next chapter yet.”
