Africa’s richest businessman, Aliko Dangote, is challenging one of Africa’s most enduring succession traditions — the belief that a family empire must pass to a son.
Dangote says his three daughters could take charge of the business empire he has spent decades building, and could even push it further.
Speaking in an interview with ARISE News, the billionaire said Halima, Fatima and Mariya have shown interest in business, making gender irrelevant to the question of succession.
“I can definitely see one of the three that can actually lead,” Dangote said when asked if any of his daughters could head the group.
When asked whether all three were capable, his response was blunt: “All of them.”
His position marks a clear departure from the traditional expectation that a son should automatically inherit control of a family business.
Dangote said what matters is not whether his successor is male or female, but whether the person has the ability, education and creativity to grow the business.
He also suggested that having a son solely to preserve the family name could become a liability if the child lacks the capacity to manage the empire.
For Dangote, succession is therefore less about bloodline and more about competence.
He pointed to major global companies that have survived beyond their founders as evidence that strong institutions and professional management matter more than simply keeping control within a particular family line.
Ultimately, Dangote said his bigger ambition is to leave behind a business legacy capable of contributing to the industrialisation of Africa, rather than simply creating another generation of wealthy heirs.
