The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race.
The party cited what it described as unresolved allegations linked to a drug-related case in the United States.
APM made the call in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Yusuf Abubakar.
The statement followed reports that Tinubu’s lawyers had challenged the release of documents allegedly held by the FBI and DEA.
APM said the legal action had increased public interest in the controversy.
The party urged the U.S. judicial system to determine the matter based on the law and available evidence.
According to APM, Tinubu’s lawyers approached the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia on August 28, 2026.
The lawyers reportedly sought to block a summary judgment and prevent the release of the documents.
APM questioned the move, saying the documents could instead help clear the President’s name if they contained no damaging information.
“If, indeed, President Tinubu’s lawyers were convinced of his innocence, they should have boldly used this case as an opportunity to help their client clear his name once and for all,” the party said.
APM also cited Section 137(1)(d) of the 1999 Constitution, which addresses disqualification from presidential election over certain convictions involving dishonesty or fraud.
However, the party did not allege that Tinubu has been convicted of such an offence.
It argued that the allegations and ongoing legal proceedings warranted public scrutiny ahead of the 2027 election.
APM said Nigerians have a legitimate interest in the records of presidential candidates, particularly an incumbent seeking another term.
The party also cited the 2024 conviction of former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández on drug-related charges in the United States.
It argued that political office should not shield public officials from accountability.
APM urged the U.S. court to allow facts and evidence to determine the matter.
The party subsequently called on Tinubu to step aside from the 2027 presidential contest.
It said his withdrawal would save Nigeria from what it described as unnecessary political embarrassment and controversy.
APM also challenged other presidential aspirants to submit themselves to public scrutiny.
It said anyone seeking Nigeria’s highest political office must be prepared to answer questions about their past and present records.
