Gunmen have abducted the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman in Rogo Local Government Area of Kano State, Abdullahi Fanka, in a fresh attack on a rural community.
Fanka was reportedly taken away after the attackers stormed Beli town, his hometown, around 10:00pm on Monday.
Residents said the gunmen opened fire as they entered the community, forcing locals who attempted to resist them to retreat.
An Almajiri was reportedly hit by a bullet during the attack. A resident said he survived and is receiving treatment.
The attackers reportedly escaped towards Babbarika village, abandoning three motorcycles along the route.
Tension reportedly increased on Tuesday morning after residents spotted a man in Rogo town asking questions about the abandoned motorcycles.
The man was apprehended, and his phones were seized before he was handed over to the police.
A resident said the man, who lives in Beli, is suspected of either being one of the attackers or an informant.
The latest incident has deepened concerns over the growing insecurity affecting rural communities in Kano and neighbouring areas.
The attack came barely a day after gunmen reportedly killed another APC chairman in Rantan village, Bebeji Local Government Area.
His wife and two others were also reportedly abducted during the attack.
Earlier, gunmen killed three people and abducted the Sarkin Noma of Kano at Chiromawa in Garun Malam Local Government Area.
The traditional leader was later rescued by security operatives.
The series of attacks has raised fresh concerns about the safety of political leaders, traditional rulers and residents in rural communities across Kano State.
Efforts to obtain the police command’s response were unsuccessful, as calls to its spokesperson, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, were not answered or returned.
