The Kano Emirate has introduced drug testing as a requirement for anyone seeking to become a traditional ruler.
The District Head of Dambatta, Dr Mansur Adnan, disclosed this on Saturday during a sensitisation programme on the dangers of drug abuse and trafficking held at his palace.
Adnan said the decision was driven by concerns over the harmful effects of drug abuse on individuals and communities.
He explained that prospective traditional rulers would be required to undergo drug tests before ascending traditional thrones in the emirate.
The programme brought together district and ward heads from Dambatta Local Government Area to raise awareness about drug abuse and trafficking.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Zonal Commander in Dambatta, Zailani Muhammad, urged traditional leaders and residents to support efforts to combat drug trafficking.
Muhammad called on residents to report suspected drug dealers and locations where illicit drugs are sold or consumed.
He said the fight against drug abuse required the cooperation of government agencies, traditional rulers, parents, teachers and other community members.
The Dambatta Divisional Police Officer, SP Ibrahim Kwasarawa, said drug abuse was linked to many crimes committed by youths in communities.
He urged parents to monitor their children and guide them towards positive behaviour.
The new requirement adds drug screening to the measures being used by the Kano Emirate to promote responsible leadership and support efforts against drug abuse.
