The management of Bayero University, Kano has prohibited the charging of privately owned electric motorcycles and other electric vehicles on all its campuses, citing escalating electricity costs and the need to protect the institution’s limited resources.
The directive, which takes immediate effect, was announced in a statement issued on Tuesday by the university’s Director of Public Affairs, Lamara Garba.
According to the university, the widespread use of its electricity supply to charge privately owned electric motorcycles and vehicles has significantly increased its power bills, placing additional financial pressure on the institution.
Management said the practice was no longer sustainable as the university continues efforts to manage its resources prudently.
Under the new directive, staff, students, commercial motorcycle operators and other users of electric motorcycles have been barred from charging their vehicles using electricity supplied by the university.
The university warned that anyone found violating the directive would face disciplinary action in line with its rules and regulations.
To ensure compliance, the institution directed provosts, deans, directors, heads of departments and heads of units to monitor activities within their respective areas and report violations to the appropriate authorities.
It also disclosed that a central monitoring team would conduct routine patrols across the campuses to enforce the ban.
The university urged members of its community to cooperate with the new measure, describing it as part of broader efforts to reduce energy costs and ensure the responsible use of public resources.
