The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has commended the Nigerian Army over its recent successes against terrorists, while urging the military high command to intensify efforts to rescue 52 Borno children reportedly held captive for about 90 days.
In a statement by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA praised Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, and troops of Operation Hadin Kai for repelling an ISWAP attack on the Forward Operating Base, Mandaragirau, in Biu Local Government Area of Borno State.
The group said the troops’ courage, tactical coordination and recovery of weapons demonstrated growing operational capacity in the fight against terrorism.
However, HURIWA said military victories must ultimately translate into the protection and freedom of civilians, particularly abducted children.
It urged the Army, Air Force, Navy, police and intelligence agencies to strengthen intelligence-sharing and coordinated operations to locate and rescue the victims.
The group also expressed concern over reports of fraudsters allegedly exploiting victims’ families by impersonating abductors and demanding ransom.
HURIWA called for regular government communication with affected families and warned Nigerians against spreading unverified information that could compromise rescue operations.
“Every additional day in captivity exposes these victims, particularly the children, to unacceptable risks,” HURIWA said, insisting that their rescue must remain an urgent humanitarian and national security priority.
The association urged Nigerians to support the Armed Forces with credible intelligence, saying the ultimate measure of success in the war against terrorism is the safe return of citizens held in captivity and restoration of peace to affected communities.
