The Concerned Northern Christian Women Forum (CNCWF), Niger State chapter, has urged Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago to address what it described as the marginalisation of Christians in political appointments and elective offices, insisting that equitable representation is essential for unity and inclusive governance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Addressing journalists in Minna on Sunday, the forum’s Chairperson, Mrs. Grace Zegi, alongside the Secretary, Mrs. Florence Dada, said the continued adoption of a same-faith governorship ticket sends the wrong signal to Christians and undermines the state’s religious diversity.
The group expressed disappointment that despite repeated appeals from various stakeholders for greater religious balance in government, Governor Bago had reaffirmed a Muslim-Muslim governorship ticket for the 2027 election.
According to the forum, while the Nigerian Constitution does not prohibit a same-faith ticket, political leadership should reflect the country’s diversity and promote inclusiveness.
“It is not about legality; it is about equity, fairness and giving every segment of society a sense of belonging,” the forum said.
The women argued that at a time when Nigeria is grappling with economic hardship and security challenges, political leaders should adopt measures that foster national cohesion and reassure all citizens that they have a place in government.
They maintained that the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the governor had an opportunity to demonstrate commitment to unity by presenting a religiously balanced governorship ticket.
“Our strength lies in our diversity. Our unity should be built on mutual respect among people of different faiths, ethnic groups and zones.
“A leadership that consciously reflects this diversity strengthens public confidence and reinforces the principle that no group should feel excluded from the highest levels of governance,” the forum stated.
The group further argued that Niger State has a sizeable Christian population whose contributions to the state’s political development deserve recognition through fair representation in key positions.
It said the zoning principle, which has gained broad acceptance across political parties in the state, should be complemented by religious inclusiveness in appointments and elective offices.
The forum acknowledged that the governor has the constitutional prerogative to choose his running mate but stressed that such discretion should be exercised with fairness and sensitivity to the state’s religious composition.
“We know the Constitution gives the governor the right to nominate anyone of his choice as running mate, but there is still no equity and fairness in Christian representation in the present administration.
“We are watching because when elections approach, Christians are remembered and asked to mobilise votes, but when appointments and key political decisions are made, we are often sidelined. We believe in equity, fairness and inclusive governance,” the forum said.
The women recalled that Christians gave Governor Bago overwhelming support during the 2023 election and said they remained committed to supporting good governance, while urging his administration to ensure balanced representation of both major religious groups in government appointments.
