A closed-door meeting between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso in Kano has fueled fresh speculation about evolving political calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The meeting, which took place Thursday night during Obasanjo’s visit to Kano State, brought together two influential political figures whose roles could prove significant in shaping the emerging opposition landscape.
Although neither side disclosed the details of their discussions, political observers view the engagement as part of a growing wave of consultations among key actors ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Kwankwaso’s media aide, Saifullahi Hassan, confirmed the meeting in a statement on Friday, describing it as a courtesy visit by the former Kano State governor to the former president at his temporary residence in Kano.
Kwankwaso was accompanied by the former Deputy Governor of Kano State and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate in Kano, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.
According to Hassan, the meeting provided an opportunity for both leaders to exchange views in what he described as a warm and constructive atmosphere.
While no official communiqué was issued after the meeting, its timing has attracted considerable attention within political circles.
Obasanjo remains one of Nigeria’s most influential political voices, often playing the role of elder statesman and power broker during critical moments in the country’s democratic journey.
Kwankwaso, on the other hand, remains one of the most formidable political figures in Northern Nigeria, commanding a loyal political base and now serving as the vice-presidential candidate of the NDC ahead of the 2027 elections.
The meeting comes at a time when opposition parties and political movements are intensifying consultations amid growing public debate over governance, economic challenges and the future direction of the country.
It also coincides with renewed political activity surrounding the NDC and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Obasanjo’s relationship with Obi has remained a subject of national interest since the former president publicly endorsed him ahead of the 2023 presidential election, describing him as the candidate best suited to unite Nigeria and deliver accountable leadership.
Given that history, Thursday’s meeting between Obasanjo and Obi’s running mate is likely to generate interest about possible discussions concerning national politics, coalition-building and preparations for the 2027 contest.
However, both camps have remained silent on the substance of the talks.
Photographs released after the meeting showed the two leaders in a relaxed and cordial mood, offering little indication of what may have transpired behind closed doors.
As political consultations continue across the country, analysts believe such high-level engagements will increasingly attract attention as stakeholders position themselves for what is expected to be a fiercely contested 2027 election.
