The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kogi State Council, has condemned the arrest and detention of the Editor of Kogi Reports, Mr. Opeyemi Owoeye, by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), warning against what it described as growing attempts to intimidate journalists through security agencies.
In a statement signed by the Council Chairman, Alhaji Ademu Seidu Haruna, and Acting Secretary, Comrade Atuluku Samuel, the union said the arrest was unnecessary and capable of undermining press freedom and democratic ideals.
The NUJ expressed concern that Owoeye was reportedly detained over a publication he did not personally author, arguing that holding an editor criminally responsible under such circumstances raises troubling questions about respect for media rights and due process.
Describing the development as an attack on the integrity of the journalism profession, the Council said the action could create a chilling effect on media practitioners carrying out their constitutional duty of informing the public.
“The arrest is seen as a deliberate attempt to dent the image of journalists and, particularly, that of the editor involved,” the statement noted.
The union cautioned the Kogi State Command of the NSCDC against being drawn into political disputes or used as a tool to settle personal scores, stressing that such actions could erode public confidence in the agency.
It urged the security outfit to remain professional, impartial and guided by the provisions of the law in the discharge of its responsibilities.
The Council further advised individuals dissatisfied with media reports to seek redress through lawful and established channels, including filing complaints with the NUJ, which it said possesses mechanisms for addressing ethical and professional concerns within the media industry.
According to the union, democracy thrives when freedom of expression is protected and institutions operate transparently and responsibly.
While demanding an end to any form of harassment against journalists, the NUJ warned that it would not hesitate to deploy lawful measures to defend media practitioners and safeguard press freedom.

The Council also called on the NSCDC Commandant in Kogi State to ensure that the matter is handled with restraint, fairness and strict adherence to the rule of law.
Reaffirming its commitment to the protection of journalists, the NUJ pledged to continue championing press freedom, constitutional rights and democratic accountability across the state and beyond.
