The Senate of the Federal University Dutse (FUD), under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Ahmed Muhammed Gumel, has approved the establishment of the School for Continuing and Distance Learning Education (SCDLE) as part of efforts to expand access to higher education and meet the needs of modern learners.
In statement signed by Abdullahi Yahaya Bello, Director of Public Affairs, for the Registrar indicated that the new school is designed to cater to working professionals, non-traditional students, and international learners.
The statement explained that it will also create alternative admission pathways for qualified applicants unable to secure placement in conventional full-time programmes.
Speaking on the development, Prof. Gumel said the global shift toward flexible and technology-driven education makes it imperative for institutions like FUD to embrace innovative learning models.
According to him, the initiative will promote digital literacy, support professional advancement, and help bridge existing gaps in access to higher education, while also boosting the university’s internally generated revenue.
The Vice-Chancellor explained that the School for Continuing and Distance Learning Education will adopt a multi-channel delivery system to maintain academic quality irrespective of students’ location or schedules.
He disclosed that the Continuing Education arm will target local professionals through weekend and evening face-to-face classes, while the Distance Learning model will provide a fully digital and borderless learning experience powered by a modern Learning Management System (LMS).
Prof. Gumel further noted that the institution will also operate a blended learning system combining approximately 60 per cent online instruction with 40 per cent physical contact sessions.
He added that programmes under the new school would cut across several faculties, including Agriculture, Computing, and Management Sciences, stressing that all courses would maintain the same academic standards as FUD’s conventional degree programmes.
