Chaos in Abuja: Task Force Operative Shot Dead in Wuse 2 Standoff

A routine enforcement operation turned deadly on Friday night in Nigeria’s capital as a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) task force operative was shot dead during a confrontation involving armed security personnel.
The incident, which unfolded in the busy Wuse 2 district, occurred along Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent, sending shockwaves through the area and raising fresh concerns over the conduct of enforcement operations in the city.
Eyewitnesses said the deceased officer was part of a task force team attempting to impound a vehicle when a dispute broke out with its occupants, reportedly accompanied by security operatives.
What began as a routine stop quickly spiralled into a heated argument at a traffic light, with the driver insisting that an object placed under his vehicle by officials had immobilised it.
“The man kept shouting that his tyre was stuck and they should remove what they placed under the car, but they refused and demanded his documents or money,” a witness recounted.
Tensions escalated when the traffic light turned green and other vehicles moved, leaving the car stranded and the confrontation intensifying.
In the midst of the standoff, one of the armed security operatives allegedly fired warning shots into the air. Moments later, he reportedly turned his weapon on a task force official and shot him at close range.
“The officer first shot into the air, but when the shouting didn’t stop, he stepped back and fired directly at one of them. He fell immediately,” another eyewitness said.
The victim was confirmed dead on the spot, triggering panic as bystanders fled and those involved in the confrontation dispersed.
Sources further claimed the vehicle was part of a convoy that included armed escorts and a foreign national, adding another layer of complexity to the unfolding incident.
Residents and commuters who gathered at the scene expressed alarm over what they described as growing friction between enforcement officials and motorists in Abuja, warning that such confrontations could spiral into more violence if not urgently addressed.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities had yet to issue an official statement clarifying the circumstances of the shooting or identifying those involved.
The killing has intensified calls for clearer rules of engagement and accountability among security and enforcement agencies operating within the Federal Capital Territory, as concerns mount over public safety in the nation’s seat of power.
