Haruna Sale has emerged winner of the biggest catch at the 2026 edition of the Nwonyo Fishing Festival, landing a massive fish weighing 55.6 kilograms to claim the star prize of N10 million.
Ismaila Yakubu secured second place with a 52.6-kilogram catch, earning N3 million, while Emmanuel Daniel came third with an 18.2-kilogram fish to take home N2 million.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, commended the Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, for reviving the festival after years of inactivity.
Musawa noted that the governor’s vision aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in leveraging tourism as a driver of sustainable development. She also revealed ongoing efforts to secure global recognition for the festival through the UNESCO.
In his remarks, Governor Kefas emphasized the festival’s role in preserving cultural heritage, boosting economic development, and strengthening community ties. He added that the increasing participation of international visitors reflects Taraba State’s growing reputation as a safe and attractive destination for tourism and investment.
Elder statesman, Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, represented by Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, described the festival as a symbol of unity and a catalyst for economic sustainability.
Also speaking, Grenadian Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell praised the initiative and announced plans for cultural exchange between his country and Taraba State. He disclosed that Taraba cultural troupes would participate in Africa Emancipation Day celebrations in Grenada to deepen cultural and economic ties.
The event, held at Nwonyo Lake in Ibbi Local Government Area of Taraba State, attracted tourists and dignitaries from within and outside Nigeria.
