Expert Calls for Shift to Organic Fertiliser, Moringa Production Amid Supply Pressures

A Nigerian agro-expert, Dr. Ashimashiga Michael Akoloaga, has urged the Federal Government to urgently support local production of organic fertiliser and expand investment in moringa cultivation, warning that global disruptions are exposing the country’s agricultural vulnerabilities.
Akoloaga, Founder and Chairman of Eden Moringa Productions and Marketers Limited, made the call on Saturday in Nyanya, Abuja, during the opening of Moringa House.
He said many farmers are currently facing difficulties accessing chemical fertilisers due to international supply disruptions linked to geopolitical tensions affecting major global trade and shipping routes.
According to him, rising costs and limited availability of agricultural inputs are already putting pressure on food production systems across Nigeria and the wider region.
He warned that continued dependence on imported fertiliser could worsen food insecurity, urging the government to prioritise homegrown alternatives such as organic fertiliser production to stabilise the agricultural sector.
Akoloaga also called for stronger policy support for private agribusinesses, arguing that an enabling environment would help unlock investment, create jobs, and reduce economic pressure on households.
He further advocated greater attention to moringa production, describing it as an underutilised crop with significant nutritional and economic potential that could support both health and livelihood diversification.
Other speakers at the event, including Professor Samuel Eduviere and Dr. Ignatius Onah, echoed calls for stronger government-private sector collaboration, particularly in agricultural innovation and natural health products.
They said strategic investment in moringa and organic farming could contribute to job creation, improved wellness outcomes, and broader economic resilience.
