New Tax Law Nigeria’s Boldest Fiscal Reform Yet — Ango

The Acting Executive Chairman of the Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS), Michael Ango, has described Nigeria’s newly introduced tax law as the most far-reaching and comprehensive tax reform in the country’s history, saying the framework is designed to simplify the tax system and strengthen national revenue generation.
Ango made the remarks in Abuja during the Tax Reform Conference 2026 organised by BusinessDay newspaper. The conference, themed “Navigating the New Tax Regime: What It Means for Your Wallet,” brought together policymakers, tax experts and business leaders to discuss the impact of the reforms on individuals and businesses.
According to him, the Presidential Tax Reform Committee chaired by Taiwo Oyedele carried out extensive consultations and technical work that resulted in a tax structure that is clearer, more efficient and easier to comply with.
Ango also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for driving the reform process with determination, noting that the president deliberately assembled experienced tax professionals from the private sector to shape the new policy direction.
He added that the establishment of the National Tax Policy Implementation Committee (NTPIC) further demonstrates the administration’s commitment to ensuring the successful implementation of the new tax regime.
Ango explained that the reforms are aimed at creating a more reliable fiscal system capable of supporting sustainable national development.
“Taxation is not meant to punish citizens. It is the most stable and predictable source of revenue available to government,” he said, adding that tax revenue plays a vital role in financing public infrastructure and essential services.
He noted that the new law introduces measures designed to make the tax system more equitable, providing relief for low-income earners while ensuring that wealthier individuals contribute a fairer share to national development.
The FCT-IRS boss also urged individuals and organisations to remain tax-compliant, stressing that responsible tax payment is critical to funding infrastructure and improving public services across the country.
Ango used the opportunity to commend the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for the pace of infrastructural development recorded in the capital city and satellite towns over the past two years.
He also reminded residents of the FCT to submit their tax returns before the March 31 deadline to avoid penalties.
The statement was signed by Mustapha Sumaila, Head of Corporate Communications at the FCT-IRS, on March 13, 2026.
