In response to the rising incidents of gender-based violence (GBV) in the Federal Capital Territory, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has initiated a widespread campaign across all six area councils.
During a recent workshop for desk officers held in Bwari and the Abuja Municipal Area Council, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, the FCT Minister of State, emphasized the critical importance of addressing GBV to build a just and equitable society.
Represented by her Special Assistant on Social Investment, Hajia Maijidda Adamu Kuku, Dr. Mahmoud highlighted that GBV impacts millions, particularly women and marginalized groups.
Special Adviser on Media to the Minister Austine Elemue in a statement quoted her to have outlined the severe psychological, physical, and emotional repercussions of GBV, which can lead to long-term health issues and perpetuate cycles of violence.
“Aggressive campaigns can significantly raise awareness about various forms of GBV, including domestic violence, sexual assault, and harassment,” she stated.
Dr. Mahmoud stressed the importance of education and outreach in challenging societal norms that condone violence. “Mobilizing communities to participate in prevention efforts can create safe environments and foster collective responsibility,” she added.
The minister urged participants to enhance awareness of GBV across the 62 political wards in the FCT, aiming to change harmful behaviors.
Celina Agana, Gender Officer of the FCT Social Safety Nets Coordinating Unit, also spoke at the workshop, stressed the need for culturally sensitive campaigns tailored to different communities.
She advocated for the use of local languages and Pidgin English to improve understanding and engagement.
Agana noted that involving community leaders and understanding local contexts could enhance campaign effectiveness, highlighting the significance of the cash transfer program in many communities.
“Intensifying campaigns against gender-based violence is crucial for ensuring human rights, promoting gender equality, and creating a safer society for all,” she concluded.
The statement concluded saying, the FCTA is committed to fostering a culture of awareness and action against gender-based violence, ensuring that all residents can live free from fear and harm.
