PDP Chieftain Says Wike’s Peace Conditions Were ‘Politically Unworkable’

A senior Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader, Mr. Umar Sani, has described the conditions for reconciliation proposed by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike as “untenable and undemocratic,” shedding light on the internal tensions that led to his expulsion from the party.
Speaking on Arise News on Sunday, November 16, 2025, Sani explained that Wike’s key demand—that the PDP forgo fielding a presidential candidate in the 2027 elections—was the main stumbling block to restoring unity. “The reconciliation committee approached Wike multiple times to heal rifts within the party, but he insisted on one extraordinary condition: no presidential candidate in 2027,” Sani said.
He argued that Wike’s stance was tantamount to a declaration of political war, leaving the party with no choice but to show him and his faction the way out. “It was clear that Wike’s intention was to impose his personal agenda on the PDP, as if the party were his own,” Sani added.
On the legitimacy of the PDP National Convention in Ibadan, where Wike and his supporters were expelled, Sani maintained that the absence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) did not invalidate the proceedings. “There are relevant electoral laws and court orders affirming the legality of the convention,” he stated.
Sani’s comments highlight the deepening fault lines within the PDP, underscoring how uncompromising demands from influential figures can escalate internal conflicts and shape the party’s strategic decisions ahead of the 2027 elections.
