The Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, has called for a clearly defined constitutional role for traditional rulers in Nigeria, saying such recognition would strengthen their contributions to national development and improve the nation’s security architecture.
Sarkindaji made the call on Friday in New Bussa, Borgu Local Government Area, after being conferred with the traditional title of Dokacin Borgu Kingdom by the Emir of Borgu, His Royal Highness Alhaji Mohammed Sani Haliru Dantoro (Kitoro IV).
The conferment was part of activities marking the Emir’s 10th anniversary on the throne of the ancient Borgu Kingdom.
The Speaker said traditional rulers, as custodians of culture and heritage, play indispensable roles in maintaining peace, resolving communal conflicts, and fostering development at the grassroots.
“Traditional institutions remain the closest link between government and the people. They are trusted, respected, and strategically positioned to support community policing and security intelligence,” he stated.
Sarkindaji, however, stressed that to maximize their potential, there must be a legal framework defining their functions and responsibilities.
“For them to help tackle insecurity effectively, there must be a legislation giving them clear roles. I call on state houses of assembly to support this cause,” he added.
The Speaker commended the Emir for his visionary leadership and his commitment to the unity and development of the Borgu Kingdom.
Other prominent Nigerians were also honoured with traditional titles as part of the week-long celebrations, which attracted dignitaries including Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago, former governors, ministers, lawmakers, and traditional rulers from across the country.
