The Coalition of Southern Groups (CSG) has condemned in the strongest terms planned protests calling for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), scheduled for October 20, 2025.
In a statement issued on Friday, CSG National Coordinator Aare Oladotun Hassan described the protests as a “premeditated deceit and evil agenda” aimed at blackmailing the Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Federal Government. The group aligned itself with the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), which had earlier voiced similar opposition.
CSG accused activist Omoyele Sowore, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and former presidential candidate Peter Obi, among others, of supporting a movement that seeks to intimidate the judiciary and destabilize Nigeria’s fragile peace.

Hassan cited IPOB’s violent history, including attacks that killed over 3,000 people, the destruction of more than 100 police stations, and property losses exceeding ₦450 billion across the Southeast. He warned that calls for Kanu’s release amounted to selective political manipulation, undermining national security and disrespecting the memory of victims.
The coalition urged the Federal Government to allow Kanu’s trial to proceed without political interference, called on security agencies to prevent disorder during the planned protests, and appealed to Nigerians, especially peace-loving citizens in the Southeast, to reject agitation and embrace dialogue.
CSG concluded that “no nation can survive when treason and terrorism are rewarded, and justice is politicized,” reiterating its support for the rule of law, national unity, and the preservation of peace.
