Former Kogi State Deputy Governor, Chief Edward Onoja, has reconciled with his predecessor, Elder Simon Achuba, in a move analysts describe as a symbolic gesture capable of reshaping the political climate in the state.

Onoja, who visited Achuba at his Abuja residence, said the meeting was a “strictly brotherly” engagement aimed at ironing out differences and fostering unity. Both men hail from the same senatorial district, with Onoja succeeding Achuba after his controversial impeachment in 2019.

The reconciliation has sparked public interest, given the long-standing speculation that Onoja played a role in Achuba’s removal — an insinuation he firmly rejected. Instead, he stressed that his visit was a mark of deep respect for Achuba, whom he described as “a respected strategist and elder brother.”

“My visit is a demonstration of the high regard I have for him and for his contributions to the unity, peace, and development of Kogi State,” Onoja said.

He acknowledged Achuba’s reputation as a leader who stood for truth and principles during his tenure, adding that he is committed to working with like-minded individuals to advance Kogi’s progress.

Former Director-General of the Kogi State Bureau of Information and Grassroots Sensitisation, Abdulkarim Abdulmalik, praised Onoja’s gesture as “a humble act of reconciliation anchored on African cultural values of respect and humility.” He also commended Achuba’s openness, describing it as “a statesmanlike embrace that promotes peace and a healthier political environment.”

Observers note that the meeting goes beyond personal reconciliation. It could serve as a model for Kogi politicians — and indeed the wider Nigerian political class — to rise above hostilities and prioritize collective progress.

“We rubbed minds as brothers, cleared misconceptions, and discussed what we can contribute as stakeholders to our state’s development,” Onoja explained.

With both men now signaling readiness to work together, their rapprochement is being seen as a challenge to other political actors to bury old grudges and place unity and growth above rivalry.
