The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has announced that it will begin full-scale enforcement of the ban on covered or obscured vehicle number plates starting Friday, October 10, 2025.

DSP Timfon John in a statement indicated that the ban affects all vehicles, including private, commercial, government-owned, security agency, and VIP vehicles.
She noted that some offenders have been exploiting hidden plates to commit crimes, making the measure a critical step in enhancing security, promoting public safety, and supporting law enforcement efforts.
According to the statement, the directive strictly prohibits covers, films, or fabrics that obscure number plates, Faded, dirty, or damaged plates, Alteration of any plate characters and Unauthorized, non-government-issued plates
The statement reiterated the determination of CP Baba Mohammed Azare and the command to enforce the ban without exception. Any vehicle found violating the rule will be impounded, and the driver penalized under the relevant traffic laws.
Motorists are given a one-day grace period on 9 October to remove all covers, ensure their plates are clean, legible, and fully compliant with government regulations.
The statement urged vehicle owners, drivers, and aides of public office holders to comply promptly to avoid sanctions.
The command emphasized that the measure is part of a broader effort to maintain law and order, reduce crime, and ensure a safe environment for all residents of Akwa Ibom State.
