Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has claimed that the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, was the true winner of last year’s general election.
Speaking on Politics Tonight on Channels Television on Monday, Lawal said his position is based on facts and data gathered during the polls. According to him, results monitored and collated from the field clearly indicated Obi’s victory, but some figures were allegedly altered to produce the outcome that declared Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Nigeria’s 16th president.
“We monitored the election, collected the data, and the results we had did not favour Tinubu,” Lawal insisted.

Asked if his comments were driven by personal animosity toward President Tinubu, the former SGF fired back: “He is arrogant. The guy has an arrogance that belies definition. He thinks I offended him, but it’s actually the other way around. I believe he didn’t win the election.”
Lawal’s remarks add to ongoing political debate and lingering controversy over the credibility of the 2023 polls.
