The Kogi Non-Governmental Organizations Network (KONGONET) has strongly condemned recent attacks on media personnel and infrastructure in the state, calling for urgent steps to bolster security around media establishments.
In a statement signed by its Chairperson, Mr. Hamza Aliyu, and made available to journalists in Lokoja, KONGONET expressed concern over the worsening security threats facing the media, particularly the recent attack on the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) Prime FM 101.5 Station in Jimgbe and the fatal assault on photojournalist Ayo Aiyepekun of InsideStory.
Aliyu described the July 26th attack on the FRCN station as a stark reminder of the fragility of Nigeria’s security architecture—both at the national and sub-national levels. He noted that the station had previously grappled with operational challenges which limited its reach and effectiveness in servicing the state capital and surrounding communities.
“This incident has further undermined the dedication of the station’s management and staff, who have been working to restore its original broadcast reach,” Aliyu stated.
He lamented that despite efforts by the Kogi State Government to combat the surge in criminal activity, the FRCN facility was still targeted, with valuable broadcast equipment looted.
“This latest attack highlights the urgent need for more robust and coordinated efforts to address the menace of armed criminality, especially within the state capital. The porous security around media facilities is a cause for concern,” he said.
KONGONET called on both the Federal and State Governments to swiftly investigate the attacks and bring the perpetrators to justice, while also urging authorities to ensure prompt replacement of the station’s stolen equipment so it can resume its public service role.
Aliyu also condemned the brutal killing of Ayo Aiyepekun, describing it as “gruesome and despicable.”
“We especially commiserate with the family of Ayo Aiyepekun during this traumatic time, and pray for strength and comfort from Almighty God,” he added.
