In a charged political atmosphere where defections have become a recurring script, one voice is cutting through the noise with a firm reminder of loyalty and legacy.
Earl Osaro Onaiwu, respected political strategist and founding Director-General of the PDP Governors’ Forum, has sent a clear and stirring message to Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri: Don’t let history judge you wrongly.
Amid growing rumours of a potential move to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Onaiwu has warned that such a step would amount to not just a political misstep, but a personal betrayal of the very platform that nurtured Diri’s entire political career.

“From commissioner to federal lawmaker, then senator and now two-term governor, the PDP has been your ladder,” Onaiwu said. “To turn your back now would not only damage your legacy—it would erase the very story that brought you this far.”
With growing examples of political figures jumping ship, Onaiwu questioned the gains of such defections.
“Many have gone to the APC before you. What do they have to show for it? Silence, irrelevance, and regret. If your political house has leaks, patch it—don’t abandon it,” he said.
Onaiwu didn’t stop there. He painted the PDP as the last standing national party with real structure and values, warning that forsaking it at the peak of one’s influence is a decision history may not forgive.
“Now is the time to deepen your commitment, not retreat. Don’t throw away honour for convenience. True leadership is tested by loyalty, especially when it’s not easy,” he added.
The message is clear: In an era of shifting allegiances, Governor Diri has a choice—to remain a statesman who stood with his party to the end, or to become another footnote in Nigeria’s long list of political defectors.
And as Onaiwu powerfully puts it, “Posterity always keeps receipts.”
