President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability in the handling of public funds, declaring that money saved from fuel subsidy removal is already being invested in infrastructure, social safety nets, and bold economic reforms.
Speaking at the opening of the 2025 National Conference on Public Accounts and Fiscal Governance in Abuja, the President—represented by Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite—emphasised that sound fiscal governance is key to unlocking Nigeria’s full development potential.
With the theme “Fiscal Governance in Nigeria: Charting a New Course for Transparency and Sustainable Development,” the conference serves as a major platform for stakeholders across government, civil society, and the private sector to collaborate on new strategies for managing public funds better.
Director of Information and Public Relations Mohammed Manga in a statement quoted President Tinubu to have cited ongoing reforms such as the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS), and the Open Treasury Portal as examples of how his administration is using technology to track spending, reduce waste, and keep citizens informed.
“Fiscal governance is the lifeblood of national development,” he said. “Without transparency and proper management of public resources, no country can grow—no matter how rich it is.”
The President also called for a stronger role for Public Accounts Committees at both national and subnational levels, saying their oversight is critical to ensuring public money works for the people.
As the conference unfolds, it is expected to generate actionable ideas that will deepen public trust, improve financial discipline, and drive sustainable growth.
