Coalition Politics: Abure-led LP Faction Gives Obi 48-Hour Ultimatum to Resign

A faction of the Labour Party (LP) loyal to embattled National Chairman, Julius Abure, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Mr. Peter Gregory Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential flagbearer, to resign his membership following his open alignment with a newly launched political coalition.

In a strongly worded statement signed by National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the Abure-led group reaffirmed its rejection of the coalition, describing its promoters as “power-hungry politicians” motivated by self-interest rather than national development.

“The so-called ‘New Nigeria’ agenda being fronted by this coalition is a deceptive promise. You cannot build a new nation with the same recycled, desperate, and frustrated political actors who have mismanaged Nigeria for decades,” the statement read.

The faction accused Obi of conducting secret meetings to woo Labour Party members into his new political movement, noting that most of the members had declined to follow him.

Reiterating its stance, the group declared:

“Labour Party is not part of any coalition. Any member associating with the group is given 48 hours to resign. We won’t tolerate dual loyalties or political double lives.”

According to the statement, Obi’s actions amount to political infidelity, and the party would not serve as a vehicle for those “Labour by day and coalition by night.”

It also warned Nigerian youths—who constitute about 70 percent of the population—not to fall for old tricks dressed in new robes.

“The same political actors responsible for Nigeria’s stagnation are now rebranding under a coalition to deceive the youth. But the New Nigeria cannot be built on old failures and recycled ambitions.”

The faction concluded by urging party loyalists to remain resolute and committed to preserving the Labour Party’s ideals of integrity, accountability, and youth-centered transformation.

“Only a united and focused Labour Party can truly lead Nigeria toward a people-driven future. We urge our members to stay firm as we prepare for future elections.”
