The Labour Party(LP) under the leadership of Senator Nenadi Usman, has strongly denied issuing any ultimatum to Mr. Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, following his recent participation in a coalition that unveiled the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a new political platform.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the Nenadi Usman-led leadership condemned what it described as “calculated mischief” and “desperate impersonation” by individuals no longer recognized by the courts or the party.
“The people behind the so-called ultimatum are political jesters who have been dismissed by the Supreme Court and suspended from the Labour Party for indiscipline and anti-party activities,” said Ken Eluma Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser on Media to the Acting National Chairman.
Asogwa confirmed that Obi’s involvement in the broader opposition coalition was not only approved but encouraged by the party’s legitimate leadership.
“Mr. Obi’s participation in the coalition and the ADC unveiling was carried out with the full knowledge, approval, and support of Senator Nenadi Usman and the leadership structure she leads,” he said.
The statement underscored that the faction issuing the ultimatum has no legal or moral standing, describing its members as “remnants of a discredited era” who once plunged the party into crisis and confusion.
“The only valid and recognised authority in the Labour Party is the office of Senator Nenadi Usman,” Asogwa asserted.
This clarification comes as Peter Obi’s political influence grows within a new national coalition aiming to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027. While some political figures attempt to sow division, the Nenadi Usman-led faction of the Labour Party made its stance clear: Peter Obi remains central to the party’s future.
“We will not allow the truth to be hijacked by those who have no stake or standing in the Labour Party,” the statement added.
The faction reiterated its commitment to unity, order, and strategic preparation for the 2027 elections—rejecting any narrative suggesting Obi has fallen out with the party.
“As we rebuild and reposition the Labour Party, there is no room for impersonators or courtroom casualties masquerading as leaders,” Asogwa said. “Our focus is on the future, and that future includes Peter Obi.”
