Dalung Challenges Tinubu Over Wike’s Conduct, Says Power Must Have Limits

Former Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung, has called on President Bola Tinubu to establish clear boundaries for the use of political power in light of growing tensions between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi.

Dalung expressed his concerns via a Facebook post, highlighting the dangers of political rivalry eclipsing fundamental standards of public conduct.

On Sunday, the burial of Amaechi’s mother, Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah Amaechi, took place in Ubima, while Wike attended a political reception in nearby Omagwa.

Reports surfaced regarding security restrictions on routes linking the two locations, with the Rivers State chapter of the African Democratic Congress alleging these measures were aimed at obstructing access to the burial.

Dalung called for an independent investigation into these allegations, stating that the matter raises broader questions about political influence operating without necessary institutional checks.

He criticized comments made at Wike’s reception concerning the upcoming 2027 elections, emphasizing that political competition should not diminish respect for an opponent’s personal grief.

He argued that political figures should engage in contests without turning every situation into a political battleground.

Dalung also challenged the notion that Wike’s current political influence is above reproach, asserting that much of it stems from the political backing he receives from the Federal Government.

Dalung redirected attention to President Tinubu, questioning whether he would act when political interests clash with institutional responsibilities.

“Political power must have limits,” he stated, urging the President to prevent public authority from being utilized to resolve political disputes.

He clarified that his stance does not equate to an endorsement of Amaechi, noting his disagreements with both Amaechi and Wike.

Dalung asserted that respect for the deceased should transcend political differences, warning against a political culture where influence is mistaken for unchecked power.

The former minister called for greater restraint among political leaders as the 2027 elections approach, insisting that democratic competition should foster respectful opponents rather than permanent enemies.
