The Jigawa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), in collaboration with the state’s Colleges of Education in Gumel and Ringim, has organized a five-day intensive training for 250 Arabic and Islamic studies teachers. The program focused on computer literacy and modern teaching techniques for primary and junior secondary schools across the state.
Speaking during an inspection visit to Takur Site Special Primary School, Professor Haruna Musa, Executive Chairman of SUBEB, described the initiative as the first of its kind in both the state and the country.
“This training addresses long-standing challenges in teaching methods and resources, particularly in Arabic and Islamic education,” Prof. Musa stated. “Teachers will be trained on updated teaching methods, lesson planning, and the use of modern instructional aids.”
He emphasized the importance of reshaping teacher attitudes, noting that some educators rely solely on discipline rather than engagement. “A teacher walking into a classroom with only a cane sends the wrong message. We want to promote a more positive and effective teaching environment.”
Professor Musa credited Governor Malam Umar Namadi for approving and supporting the initiative, which brought together 18 resource persons from relevant academic fields to deliver the training.
The program also covered professional appearance, classroom behavior, and the role of teachers as mentors and role models. Participants were selected from across the state based on merit and are expected to disseminate their newly acquired skills to colleagues.
One of the participants, Malam Ibrahim Kude, praised the training, saying, “This is the first time teachers of Arabic and Islamic studies are receiving such focused and well-organized professional development. The choice of topics and facilitators is truly commendable.”
The initiative aims to improve the quality of teaching and learning in Islamic and Arabic education throughout Jigawa State.
