A heavy downpour on Monday has led to a devastating flood in Bachure New Extension, a densely populated community in Jimeta, Yola North LGA of Adamawa State, submerging homes and businesses and leaving many residents displaced.
The early morning rainfall caused blocked and poorly maintained drainages to overflow, flooding major streets and residential areas. Although the rainfall affected the wider Jimeta metropolis, Bachure was the worst hit, with widespread damage reported.
Frustrated residents have blamed the flooding on the town’s inadequate drainage infrastructure. “This drainage was meant to solve our problems, but it’s now the main reason our community is under water,” said Ephraim Timothy, a resident, referring to the silted and refuse-filled drains.
While Adamawa residents grapple with the aftermath, Niger State is scaling up its support for victims of a recent flood in Mokwa Local Government Area. Governor Muhammad Umaru Bago has announced a N1 billion relief fund during his on-site assessment of destroyed homes in the area.
Governor Bago stressed the importance of avoiding construction along waterways, emphasizing that such actions put lives and property at risk. He also gave assurances that all donations—monetary and material—from the Federal Government and other sources would be used solely to support the affected communities.
In a bid to prevent future occurrences, the governor revealed plans to construct a durable drainage network and concrete bridges across Mokwa town.
Appreciating the support received from various quarters, Bago reiterated his administration’s commitment to resettling all displaced persons and restoring normalcy as swiftly as possible.
