As Nigeria marked International Children’s Day on Tuesday, Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau, issued a passionate call for an end to all forms of child exploitation across the state.

In a statement signed by his Press Secretary, Jibrin Gwamna, and made available to journalists in Lafia, the Speaker decried the alarming rates of out-of-school children, child labour, street hawking, and begging, calling them unacceptable realities that threaten the future of the Nigerian child.

    > “Children are special gifts from God. We must protect, nurture, and invest in them. It is heartbreaking to see so many children deprived of their right to education and a safe upbringing,” the Speaker said.

Jatau reaffirmed the 7th Assembly’s resolve to continue enacting laws and passing resolutions that safeguard the rights of children, promote access to education, and eliminate societal practices that hinder their growth and development.

    > “We will not relent in our legislative duties to support policies that secure the well-being and potential of every child in Nasarawa State. The future of our state depends on it,” he stated.
The Speaker emphasized that the fight against child neglect and abuse must go beyond government actions, urging parents, community leaders, and stakeholders to embrace collective responsibility.
“The government alone cannot fix this. Every parent, guardian, and citizen must play their part. When we protect our children, we protect the future of our society.”

Jatau also issued a stern warning to parents and guardians, urging them to prioritize the education of their children above all else, describing it as the most effective tool against poverty, ignorance, and societal ills.
“Education is not a luxury—it is a right. We must rise to give every child, regardless of background, the chance to learn, grow, and thrive.”

He concluded by urging citizens to reflect deeply on the significance of Children’s Day and recommit to building a society where every child is safe, educated, and empowered to dream.
