A deepening scandal has rocked the Labour Party (LP), following Nigeria’s Attorney General recommendation for the prosecution of former LP National Chairman, Julius Abure, over alleged criminal conspiracy, forgery, and perjury—charges that, if pursued, could have far-reaching consequences for internal democracy in Nigerian politics.
Hon. Afam Ogene, leader of the LP caucus in the House of Representatives indicated that the new revelations have not only vindicated his long-standing criticism of Abure’s leadership but exposed a wider pattern of manipulation and institutional rot within the party’s ranks.
“This is not just about one individual,” Ogene said. “It’s about the soul of the Labour Party and the integrity of our democratic processes. If we let this slide, we normalize impunity.”
The Attorney General’s recommendation followed a detailed petition by Splendour Oko Eze, LP’s 2023 governorship candidate in Ebonyi State, who alleges that party officials, led by Abure, forged documents to falsely present his withdrawal from the race and install another candidate in his place.
The AGF’s letter—dated March 7, 2025, and signed by M.B. Abubakar from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions—confirmed a prima facie case against Abure and three co-accused: Farouk Umar Ibrahim, Nkwegu Edward Okereke, and Ojukwu Clement.
Forensic analysis reportedly confirmed that the withdrawal letter and LP membership card submitted to INEC were forged, bearing signatures that do not match Eze’s verified documents. The affidavit allegedly filed to support the withdrawal was also found to be inauthentic and not deposed to by Eze.
Despite these findings, Ogene raised the alarm over the police’s silence, more than two months after the AGF’s directive. He accused the force of shielding the suspects, warning that continued delay undermines the credibility of law enforcement and encourages a culture of impunity.
“What else are they waiting for?” Ogene asked. “This case is not a political witch hunt—it is a litmus test for justice and rule of law. If the law cannot touch powerful individuals within political parties, then we are all at risk.”
He pointed to a 2023 police investigation report, which cited the repeated failure of the accused to honor police invitations, describing their behavior as a “clear affront to justice.”
While the scandal may appear to be an internal party affair, analysts believe the outcome could have wider political consequences.
“This case could set a precedent,” said political analyst Dr. Folahan Adedayo. “If political parties see that leaders can forge documents, override democratic primaries, and face no consequences, it’s a recipe for chaos in 2027 and beyond.”
“This is not just Labour Party’s problem—it’s Nigeria’s problem,” said civic activist Ngozi Chukwuemeka. “The credibility of our elections begins with credible primaries. What happened in Ebonyi is a betrayal of voters, of party members, and of democracy itself.”
Ogene believes this moment offers the Labour Party a chance to reclaim its moral authority by distancing itself from corrupt practices and fully cooperating with the prosecution process.
“If we claim to be different, we must act differently,” he said. “The era of covering up for corrupt leaders must end—starting now.”
As the public awaits action from the police, the AGF’s office has requested periodic updates on the case, a sign that pressure is mounting from higher quarters.
