A domestic argument between a young couple in Eket, Akwa Ibom State, took a deadly turn on Tuesday, leaving one dead and the other fighting for his life in the hospital.
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command confirmed that 26-year-old Ruth Ngozi Sunday was killed in a violent altercation with her live-in boyfriend at their residence in Qua River Quarters.
Police arrived at the scene around 10:15 AM to find both individuals lying in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds, reportedly inflicted with a kitchen knife.
While the motive for the altercation remains unclear, investigators believe the lovers engaged in a heated argument that spiraled fatally out of control.
Ruth was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Her boyfriend, whose name has not been released, was found barely conscious and is currently receiving treatment under police watch.
“The murder weapon has been recovered, and a full investigation is underway,” said DSP Timfon John, spokesperson for the State Command. She added that the deceased’s family has been contacted, while efforts are ongoing to trace the suspect’s relatives.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the quiet community of Qua River Quarters, with neighbours expressing disbelief that a seemingly ordinary relationship could end so violently.
Police have vowed to get to the root of the matter, even as Ruth’s death adds to growing concerns over domestic violence and mental health challenges among young couples.
Further updates are expected as investigations progress.
