Kogi Central is set to witness a transformative shift in maternal healthcare as Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan flags off the construction of a free maternity and childcare centre. In a bold move that blends compassion with action, the senator is not only addressing the pressing need for accessible maternal care but also tackling economic hardship through skill empowerment programs.
Chief Press Secretary to the senator, Arogbonlo Israel in a statement on Thursday pointed out that with a 20-bed capacity, two delivery rooms, an ICU, and dedicated staff quarters, the Centre is poised to become a lifeline for pregnant women in the district. 
The Centre, scheduled for completion in four months, will provide free and efficient maternity services to women in the district, the statement explained further
According to the statement. Senator Natasha, a mother of four, underscored the harsh realities of childbirth, particularly for women in rural areas with little to no access to quality healthcare.
“I understand the physical toll of pregnancy and the risks involved. If I, with access to healthcare, acknowledge these challenges, I can only imagine the struggle for rural women. This maternity centre will change that,” she declared.
Beyond healthcare, the senator is rewriting the narrative of self-sufficiency in Kogi Central. Through a structured empowerment program, she has equipped trained welders and carpenters with essential tools to establish their own businesses, shifting them from dependency to financial independence.
Her generosity extends further—200 bags of rice were distributed at the event, supplementing the 2,400 bags given weeks earlier.
The maternity center, strategically located near the resting place of the Ebira nation’s mother and the Eid ground, symbolizes a fusion of history, culture, and progress.
